In this year’s Fine Arts & Exhibitions special issue of The New York Times, Contributing Writer Tanya Mohn shines a spotlight on two exhibitions coming to Chicago this fall that celebrate the city’s Latino communities.

The Chicago History Museum’s Aquí en Chicago, a bilingual show starting Oct. 25, 2025 (and running through Nov. 8, 2026), will explore the cultural heritage and traditions of Latino people. The idea developed after area high school students on a social studies field trip protested the lack of representation of local Hispanic history.

The National Museum of Mexican Art will be opening Rieles y Raíces: Traqueros (Nov. 21, 2025 – Mar. 29, 2026), an exhibition honoring Mexican and Mexican American Rail Workers in the United States, many of whom were directly recruited by railroad companies to work in Chicago’s rapidly growing industrial sector that put Chicago on the map.

If you are visiting Chicago this fall, make sure to save a space in your itinerary!
